Team Rising attends the first rounds of training for the Supportive Housing Institute

Team Rising attended the first rounds of training for the Supportive Housing Institute, a partnership between Baltimore City Department of Housing & Community Development, the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services and other nonprofit partners in community development.

Attending the 12 sessions allows project teams to get access to up to $150,000 in grant funding to support the development of quality affordable and supportive housing.

“It was very informative and super interactive,” said Ty Brown, Director of Operations at Appalachian Field Services (AFS), who attended the Institute. “Some of the things I learned were a little heartbreaking. On any given night, there’s 1,500 homeless people in Baltimore, and 73% of those are Black people.”

Eva Gillard, Project Manager at AFS, said the training was insightful in breaking down the different roles that a property manager developer and service provider take on when providing supportive housing.

“People in supportive housing are more than a rent check,” said Gillard. “They are people who deserve a change and need help and support to make that happen.
